This is a replica I made of one of George Herriman’s early Krazy Kat strips. I want to say that it was from something like 1918.
In my comics class, we were asked to bring in a favorite strip, and this is the one I brought in. The joke isn’t the strongest, but the overall feel of the strip is really striking to me. Herriman’s use of hatching is really a thing of wonder to me, and the whimsical and surreal trees and landscapes are really delightful. The absurdity of having an intermission during a single page comic is really funny.  The absence of panels lines gives the last panel so much impact, like a period at the end of a sentence. Krazy Kat is so great because there are a thousand hilarious nuances on every page. You know a strip is great when even its weakest jokes are fun to read.
notes:
There are several differences between the original and mine, but the one thing different in mine that I (quite humbly) think is good is that I (quite accidentally)  spelled Eleven “Elevin.” for some reason I feel like the misspelling fits in just right.
I was showing a friend several of my comics and when she came to this one she said, “I haven’t even read this one and it is my favorite, why is that?” To which I responded, “that’s because it isn’t mine.” Still, it’s a nice feeling to copy a genius well.
